MONTICELLO - The Monticello community American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Zwingli United Church of Christ in Monticello.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the American Red Cross is asking all eligible donors to assist in the fight against all cancers by donating blood. Breast cancer is the most common type of non-skin cancer in women. In 2008, an estimated 182,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States. Cancer treatment often involves aggressive use of potent drugs, which kill both healthy and cancerous cells.

"Many people are affected by the devastation cancer causes the cancer patient and their family and friends," said Mary Aeberhard, co-coordinator of the local Monticello Blood Drive "By donating blood, you can help ensure that those with cancer will have the blood products they need to continue fighting the disease."

All blood types are needed. A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must be at least 17 years old and must weigh at least 110 pounds.
