Monroe Woman’s Club gives awards

MONROE — On May 1, the Monroe Woman’s Club Spring Social was held at the Union Presbyterian Church and the theme for the evening was “Our Future’s so Bright-We Gotta Wear Shades.” 

Monica Schneider, club president, began the evening by introducing Sue Armstrong and Konnie Thompson who spoke of our Community Improvement Projects. They then presented this month’s CIP awards to Andrea Schmitz, the Monroe Public Library, $400; Chris Wellington, Loaves and Fishes, $400; Lori Block, Family Promise of Green County, $500; and Jordan Nordby, Mainstreet Monroe, two separate check totaling $1,600; and Mary Dietz, Green County Food Pantry, $145 and 103 pounds of food. 

Lynne Wheeler presented a scholarship in the amount of $500 to Hannah Rucker. Two other scholarships were awarded to Jessica Klarer and Brainna Weiss, who were not in attendance.

The evening’s program also included the annual awards presentation. Art chairwomen Kathy Reffue and Barb Sathoff presented the 2019 Monroe Helen Mears Contest Winners. The first category was the Class A 2D Painting and Drawing Artwork. Olivia Levia, eighth grade, received first place; Jenna Calvagna, eight grade, second place; Aislin Coyle, seventh grade, third place; and honorable mention went to Heather Breault, seventh grade and Gabe Whitney, seventh grade. The 3D-Sculpture winners included Jenna Calvagna, eighth grade, first place; Sara Christison, seventh grade, second place; and Brooke Hanson, seventh grade, third place. Honorable mention included Maisie Mayer, seventh grade and Morgan Waski, seventh grade.

The 2019 Helen Mears winners from Southern Prairies District Convention for the Class A Painting/Drawing included Gabe Whitney, second place and Olivia Levia, third place. For the Class A Sculpture were Sara Christison, second place and Jenna Calvagna, third place. 

Poetry winners for 2019 Category 1 (grades 1 and 2) included first place, William Speer, second grade; second place Elizabeth Veeder and third place went to Ella Morimer, second grade. 

Category 2 (grades 3, 4, and 5) were first place Credence Hubert, third grade; second place, Althea Eckdahl, third grade; and third place Miley Hanson. 

Category 3 (grades 6, 7 and 8) was first place, Cynthia Murphy.

Short Story winner for Category 1 (grades 1 and 2) included Elena Bos; second place, Elise Steinmann; and third place went to Arabella Hicks. 

Category 2 (grades 3, 4 and 5) winners were Aubrey Davis, first place; Elivie Guth, second place; and Isaac Leverton received third place. Category 3 (grades 6, 7 and 8) winner was Ryan Mathiason, first place.

Poetry State Contest winners for 2019 included Category 1 (grade 1 and 2) included first place, William Speer. Category 2 (grade 3, 4 and 5) had a first place for Credence Hubert. Category 3 (grades 6, 7 and 8) had a second place winner, Cynthia Murphy.

Once the awards were done, club members went to Fellowship Hall for the keyboard magic provided by Sheri Novak with refreshments.

During the business meeting Jean Tullet was recognized as the newest member of the very elite group of women who have been club members 50 years and beyond. Those members, along with past presidents, were honored for the service. 

Members who participated in the 2019 Southern Prairies District Arts and Crafts Contest. The results shared included Irene Chambers, second place for her crochet project and first place for her miscellaneous project. 

Sheila Fry, Holiday Decorations — wreath, third place, scrapbooking, first place, weaving, second place, first place for her photo, “A Year in Pictures” and first place for another photo, “World in Pictures.” 

Carla Hartwig, knitting –—child’s sweater, first place; Deb Hutchinson sewing — hand — first place; Alice Kranig, first place glass-slumping and jewelry second place. Barb Sathoff received first place for her holiday decoration. Cheri Wesenberg received second place for her holiday decoration and first place for her quilting.

The members had been challenged to participate to decorate any shade (sunglasses, lamp, etc.) in their most creative way. As the night came to a close, winners of the Shades Contest were announced. First place Cheri Wesenberg, second place Lori Lovejoy and third place Jenni Coplien.
