MONROE - Erica Moon's Intro to Painting students have completed a Van Gogh Painting Project.
The famous Starry Night painting by Van Gogh, painted in 1889, was the student's inspiration.
Moon's painting class talked about Van Gogh's life, his impressionist style of painting, and the use of impasto techniques.
The painting Starry Night was divided into 12 equal sections for this project.
Eleven students and Moon worked on their own canvas contributing a piece of the puzzle.
The class started by drawing their part of the painting onto their own 14" X 16" canvas.
They added the impasto medium to change the two dimensional painting surfaces into a three dimensional or sculptural painting.
Students made sure to follow the direction of the swirling sky to continue the movement throughout the piece.
Each student had to make sure the direction of their impasto was matching up with the next student's painting. The color had to be cohesive as well.
Students used a limited paint palette to make sure each piece blended with the next painting. Moon liked the fact that the students brought their own style to each one of their paintings.
Students had fun working together and in the end created a great collaborative piece of art that will be a permanent installation at the Monroe High School.
The painting is located just outside the art rooms. The students involved in the project are Calyn Bidlingmaier, Alyssa Bloyer, Kasie Duffy, Elizabeth Eiseman, Hannah Grossen, Tess Seichter, Jordan Stiner, Meaghan Tomasiewicz, Ari Meier, Flannery Steffens, and Erica Moon. Moon has been recently hired by the Brodhead Middle School to start the 2008 school year.
