Monroe public library summer program opens for registration

MONROE - Registration begins today for the Monroe Public Library Summer Library Program, Fizz Boom Read. Special programs go through Aug. 2.

Kick-off events today include light refreshments on the first floor of the library, 925 16th Ave., as well as ice cream for kids on the second floor from 1 to 3 p.m.

Participants of all ages may register in person at the library or online at www.monroepubliclibrary.org. Brochures describing the reading programs and special summer events are available in the children's room and at the library's check-out desk. Once the program has begun, participants can join the library's reading programs at any time during the summer, and participation in the reading program is not a requirement for attending events.

Early Birds early literacy program is for babies and toddlers up to age 3. The program encourages parents and caregivers to read to their children, share songs and rhymes and practice the early literacy skills a child needs to be ready to read. Wiggle Time with Grandma Carol will be held at 10 a.m. Mondays.

Reading Explorers is for children ages 3 to 6. Those who participate can read with a partner and then fill in a simple reading record and earn prizes. Stories and More with Miss Andrea will be held at 10 a.m. Thursdays.

The Fizz, Boom, Read reading program is for students entering first through fifth grades. Young readers are encouraged to read for fun for 20 minutes each day, fill in their reading records and earn prize coupons. Students can also participate in the Wild Wednesday programs.

Spark a Reaction is for students entering grades six through nine. Those who participate can read, review the book and choose their own prizes. Those who read three books can enter their name in the Grand Prize Drawing. Participate in weekly science activities in the teen area.

Literary Elements is for adults and high school students. Those who read will complete a Tic-tac-toe game and be entered to win prizes.

Special events for children are scheduled as part of the library's summer reading program. Wild Wednesday events include special presentations and hands-on workshops. A full schedule of Wild Wednesday events is available at the Monroe Public Library or online. Registration is required for these programs. To register, sign up in person or call 608-328-7010.

The Lunch Bunch Read Aloud for students entering fourth through sixth grades. Participants may bring a brown bag or fast food lunch held at 12:45 p.m. each Thursday, starting June 26 through July 31. No Lunch Bunch will be held on July 3. No registration is required for the Lunch Bunch Read Aloud program.

All programs at the Monroe Public Library are free and open to patrons.
