Monroe: Optimists oratorical contest is March 6 at WCB

MONROE - Green County Morning and Noon Optimists' oratorical contest will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Wisconsin Community Bank, Monroe. The topic is "Why Me? Why Not?"

The contest is open to contestants under the age of 16 as of Dec. 31, of the 2007-08 school year. There is no minimum age.

Separate contests and awards will be held for girls and boys. There is no minimum number per Club Contest.

Club awards go to first, second, and third place girls and boys, and include a medallion and monetary awards ranging from $50-$100.

First place at district level contest receives a $1,500 college scholarship and plaque. All contestants receive lapel pins and framed award certificates.

Speech is limited to 4 to 5 minutes on the topic: "Why Me? Why Not?" Contestants are judged on poise, 20 points; content of speech, 35 points; delivery and presentation, 35 points; and overall effectiveness, 10 points.

The zone level contest begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 5 and the district contest is from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 3.
