Monroe, Monticello FFA place at top of Land Judging competition

BLANCHARDVILLE - The Lafayette County Land and Water Conservation Department hosted the 2012 Southwest Wisconsin Land Judging competition on Oct. 18, at the Jake and Robyn Ryser farm near Blanchardville.

The event alternates between Grant, Green and Lafayette counties with FFA students from area counties competing. About 175 students from nine schools participated at this year's contest. Those participating were the FFA chapters from: Albany, Belmont, Black Hawk, Cuba City, Monroe, Monticello, Platteville, Potosi and River Ridge.

The students reviewed four soil pits and evaluated soil properties, estimate slope, rank land classes and recommend conservation practices in the contest.

The top five teams and their total scores were:

1. Monroe, 1036

2. Potosi, 967

3. Monticello, 961

4. River Ridge, 906

5. Belmont, 828

The top individuals and their total score out of 400 possible points were:

1. Mark Jenson, Monroe, 363

2. Kyle Roesch, Potosi, 343

3. Troy Gorr, Monroe, 342

4. Austin Schneider, Potosi, 334

5. Austin Minder, Monroe, 331
