MONROE - As we move into spring, area organizations are in need of extra supplies to extend to area residents with needs. Members of the Green County Leaders Class of 2007-08 are asking area businesses and individuals to "Lend-A-Hand" with a commitment to adding one of four organizations to their "giving' list for 2008. To kick-off the endeavor, "March in with Diapers" will be the focus of the group first.
GC Leaders members Marge Klinzing, Frank Davis, Marcey Sink, Nikki Matley, Larry Brown, Jeanne Hermanson, Tonya Mulrooney, Ron Tuttle, Susan Wetherington and Christina Symons are working together to increase awareness of the needs of four organizations in Green County that serve those less fortunate. Those organizations are the Green County Food Pantry, Green County Humane Society, CareNet Pregnancy Center of Green County and Green Haven. By contacting businesses and organizations and asking them to commit to collecting money or items for one or more of the above organizations during 2008, the group hopes to help those organizations better meet the needs of their clients.
And to start off the collection process, the GC Leaders group designated March as "March in with Diapers" month for CareNet Pregnancy Center of Green County. The group is asking interested individuals and/or businesses to take time to collect packaged new diapers of all sizes. The diapers can be dropped off at Union Presbyterian Church, 2707 5th Street; CareNet Pregnancy Center's office, 1508 11th Street; the Bering Senior Center, 1113 10th Street; the Monroe Parks and Recreation office, 1110 18th Avenue; the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Avenue; or the Monroe High School,1600 26th Street. All locations are in Monroe at this time. Other arrangements can be made for pick up by contacting the Klinzing at the Monroe Parks and Recreation office, (608) 329-2460 or Wetherington at Green County Development Corporation, (608) 328-9452.
In March, the group hopes to have a brochure ready for the public with more information about the needs and the contact information for the four organizations. Although the group knows there are many worthwhile groups with needs in Green County, the Leaders felt the four were a good starting point. "Mostly we just want to encourage people and businesses in Green County to 'lend-a-hand' to those in the county that have needs," group leader Klinzing said. "Our plan is to have a special focus in April, May and June also." In addition, each of the group members will be asking organizations or businesses to consider adding one of the four groups to their calendar for special drives during 2008.
Each year, GCL participants are required to develop a project to address a need in Green County. The results of those projects are shared during the last class session. Often times the class members continue to be involved in taking their project beyond the "classroom."
Green County Leaders is made possible through a partnership of the Green County Development Corporation, Green County UW-Extension, the Monroe Campus of Blackhawk Technical College, and other area organizations and businesses that donate their time by serving on program committees and as session speakers. The program's mission is to provide an educational program where individuals can practice leadership skills, deepen their understanding of community issues and prepare for leadership roles, thereby creating a network of individuals committed to the future of Green County.
The program consists of an orientation, nine classes and the graduation ceremony. Program advisors are GCDC Executive Director Anna Schramke, Green County UW-Extension Community Development Educator Sarah Burgert, and Community Leader Kent Anderson. Over 100 people in the Green County area have graduated from the program since its conception in 2001.
The Green County Development Corporation (GCDC), a multi-jurisdictional economic development corporation, was formed to bring professional economic development expertise to its member communities to create a competitive advantage to spur job creation and new investments. The organization leverages the resources of the county and its municipalities to ensure economic health and success of Green County communities and businesses.
