MONROE - Dr. James P. Leary of University of Wisconsin-Madison will present "Remembering Rudy Burkhalter and Other Noted Swissconsin Musicians" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at Turner Hall of Monroe.
What is it about Monroe and its history that makes it so unique? Without question, Monroe would be very similar to other Midwestern communities its age if it weren't for Swiss immigration. From the 1920s through the 1940s, Wisconsin Swiss musicians Rudy Burkhalter, the Moser Brothers, Otto Rindlisbacher, Louis Alder, John Giezendanner and Albert Mueller made a series of historic recordings on commercial labels and for the Library of Congress.
Leary's presentation, part of Turner Hall's 2008 Swiss Heritage Series, is also a featured Monroe Sesquicentennial event. The presentation is open to the public. A free-will donation of $5 is suggested. More information is available at www.TurnerHallofMonroe.org or by calling (608) 325-3461.
