MONROE — The Monroe Arts Center has announced new Arts Workshops starting in July. Registration is open for students of all ages to expand their artistic curiosity from mosaic to fiber art and more while expressing themselves through their own unique creations.
Youth ages fourth through eighth grade can enroll now in MAC’s Mosaic workshop where students will experience this ancient art form. Working in cement and with found objects, students will design and create a garden stepping stone that is unique to them and that will provide a functional work of art for their backyard or garden space. This class runs in four, two-hour sessions from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 29 to August 1. Spaces are limited, so registering early is requested.
MAC is also introducing basic sewing workshops that are free to youth ages fourth through 12th grade beginning in August due to the generosity of Monroe Morning Optimists, who have recently funded the introduction sessions and a new sewing Makerspace at the Monroe Arts Center. Jen Chapman will be teaching these two free workshops on August 16 and August 30. Classes will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. both days. Students will learn how to work with fabric and machine sewing to create a book sleeve of their own unique design while learning basic sewing skills.

From August 19-22, MAC will be offering a Youth Arts Workshop on building a Fairy House for a backyard garden setting as a whimsical seasonal decoration. This class runs in four, two-hour sessions from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Youth will be encouraged to design their own unique fairy space that speaks to their own personal creativity. Working in wood construction and using found and natural objects sparked by their imagination, students will come away with a deeper understanding of building a unique artful creation and perhaps know a little fairy lore to boot.
As the Monroe Arts Center expands its educational offerings in the arts, staff is excited to also welcome back artist Karen Fitzgerald, who will be offering a two-hour workshop for adults on the art of Gilding (i.e. the process of applying gold leaf or gold paint) on Sept. 5. Participants will come away with a clearer understanding of gilding possibilities including processes, materials, and a variety of applications. Participants will learn how to gild on one of their own works with choice of size and leaf.
MAC welcomes learners of all ages to the arts center. These arts workshops will all be held in the Colony Brands StArt Center located at MAC which offers a spacious area to create for all ages.
