MONROE - The Monroe American Legion Family will be distributing information about the programs offered by the American Legion and about the support the Legion does from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 6 at two grocery stores, Pick "n Save, 246 8th St., and Piggly Wiggly, 725 8th St.
Information on college scholarships and other financial opportunities as well as local and American Legion programs that they support will be available.
In 2013-14, American Legion supported the four pillars of the American Legion: veterans affairs and rehabilitation, children and youth, Americanism, and national security.
During the year, they provided emergency aid to a local veteran; donated 300 electronic books valuing $1,800 to the Madison VA hospital; financially supported the VA's hospitals, homeless centers, Christmas Gift Shop and local veterans in nursing homes; donated to Camp American Legion; provided a Memorial Day parade and program; supported youth baseball with a fundraising breakfast; sponsored students so they could attend Badger Boys and Girls State programs; provided nearly $3,000 in scholarships to Monroe students; spent nearly $3,500 on care packages to active military in harm's way; presented flags to school classrooms; and provided military funeral honors to local heroes sharing their lives with over 3,000 volunteer hours.
Members from each branch of the Legion family - the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders - will be available to answer questions about who they are and what they do.
