Each year, a selection committee consisting of members from WASC, Wisconsin Association for Middle Level education, AWSA, Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators, Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association, Wisconsin Parent Teacher Association, Rotary District 6250, WEA Trust and the Milwaukee Bucks selects one middle school as the state winner.

The Spirit of Excellence Committee consisted of eighth grade science students Allison Wunschel, Savannah Harris, Kennedy Taylor, Austin Fuchs, Charlie Wiegel, Clayton Waski and Max Petitjean.

The middle school will continue to be recognized at a Milwaukee Bucks game on April 7 and at the WASC State Conference on May 5.

At the assembly that morning, the Monroe Middle School had presentations from the middle school band and choir. Pig races were also hosted and the winners of the Pig Competition categories were Fastest: Elvis Pigsly of Mrs. Dyrhaug’s Homeroom; Best Dressed: Elvis Pigsly of Mrs. Dyrhaug’s homeroom; and Best Name: A bro ham linkoln of Mrs. Peterson’s homeroom. These homerooms will earn money for their recognition.

The assembly also was a time where student council hosted their “Kiss the Pig” competition. Student council hosted a change competition where students could donate change to various staff member collection cups.

The winning staff member, Stephanie Wiegel, kissed a pig that morning.

All money collected that morning, $75, was donated to the Green County Food Pantry.
