Mentoring programs ready as school bells ring again in Monroe

MONROE - As children begin a new school year in Monroe, Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs are gearing up to find qualified mentors for students who want and need a caring high school student in their lives. Mentors are interviewed and trained in Monroe on Oct. 14. They meet their Little Brother or Little Sister on Oct. 21.

Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program meets in Monroe High School. Mentors and their Little Brother or Little Sister meet immediately after school. Their activities can include working on homework and playing board games. Mentors are asked for a commitment of at least one year. They are expected to build a relationship with an elementary student.

The latest research available on school-based mentoring shows that this form of mentoring has potential if done in a quality way with mentor training and staff support. Elementary students improve academically and reduce negative school behaviors. Students feel more competent academically.
