MONROE - The Green County Master Gardeners will be holding its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. March 22 at the Green County Justice Center in the multi-purpose rooms.
Meetings usually include speakers or tours for learning and are open to the public.
This month's meeting will feature Erin Schneider of Hilltop Community Farm speaking on "Exploring Local Fruits from Plant to Table." Schneider comes from the Hilltop Community Farm in LaValle, a small-scale diversified farm specializing in wedding flowers, CSA and fruit. They work by hand, utilizing solar energy to lovingly produce organic food and flowers. Prairies and woodlands also provide habitat, beauty and blooms for bouquets. Their orchard is a mixed species of food: forest-producing currants, elderberry, kiwi, quince, pears and more.
The meeting is a chance to learn ways to manage and enjoy local fruits from plants to the table. Schneider will cover a variety of topics with an emphasis on local fruits that do well in South Central Wisconsin, including site assessment, design, seasonal management, care for young and maturing fruit trees and considerations for ongoing growth and planting success.
They will also have a few local fruit creations as samples. Leave the workshop inspired, informed and with some practical tips in thinking through what young fruit trees and shrubs need to thrive.
The Green County Wisconsin Master Gardeners Association was formed in Green County in 2004 to provide Master Gardeners with opportunities for professional development and community service. Last year, members of the association volunteered 177 hours of community education and 1976 hours in community service projects in Green County. Master Gardener volunteers also assist the University of Wisconsin-Extension Office in responding to horticulture questions.
The Green County Master Gardeners Association meets on the fourth Thursday of the month from February through October. Association officers for 2018 include Rae Wellnitz, president; Tanna McKeon, vice president; Kristi Leonard, secretary; and Lynn Lokken, treasurer. Anyone interested in horticulture and gardening is welcome to join the association and does not have to be a Master Gardener to be a member.
