MONROE — Monroe’s own Burington Shoes is the newest recipient of the TDS-sponsored Dream Big-Small Business Award recognizing an exceptional local business. The award, which includes a $1,000 prize, will be presented this week at Main Street Monroe’s Gala on Oct. 24 at Monroe Arts Center.

John and Val Burington opened their footwear retail store 20 years ago. After running a dairy farm for more than two decades, the couple was ready for a new challenge and decided to start Burington Shoes in 2005. The business has become a staple in the region for its wide range of quality offerings and excellent customer service. Burington Shoes was selected as the winner of the award by the leadership committee of Main Street Monroe.

“Supporting small businesses is at the heart of building vibrant communities. We are excited to partner with TDS on this award to help boost these special entrepreneurs who have been a vital part of downtown Monroe’s resurgence,” said Executive Director of Main Street Monroe Jordan Nordby. “When local businesses succeed, our neighborhoods thrive and we create opportunities that benefit everyone.”

“Especially as a Monroe resident, I’m delighted to honor Val and John and their wonderful business,” said Kirsten Ostby, TDS coordinator of Field Marketing. “Monroe is a special place and TDS is proud to work with Main Street Monroe to strengthen the business community.”
