MONROE - For more than 15 years, the Monroe Arts Center has annually presented performing artists to students in Monroe and Green County at special performances during the school day. Student audiences have experienced musical and dramatic theater, puppetry, dance, magic, and various kinds of musicians and musical groups.
This fall, music students at both the Monroe High School and Monroe Middle School attended workshops with the Dallas Brass, one of this country's foremost musical ensembles. With a range of musical styles from Dixieland, swing, Broadway, folk, patriotic, and pop, the Dallas Brass performs a musical journey through American history. Both the high school and middle school bands performed with the Dallas Brass in an evening public performance. This was made possible through a special partnership between the Monroe Arts Center and Monroe School District.
Alpin Hong, a Julliard graduate in classical piano and skateboard enthusiast, engaged high school students in two concert talks. He demonstrates speed and energy in his piano playing, as well as humor and a youthful outlook to entertain students.
Most recently, middle school students were informed and entertained by Todd Green, a multi-instrumental solo artist. With instruments from South America, the Middle East, India, and China, Green played the music from these various regions of the world, informing students about the culture, and their correlates in Western Culture. He studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston and at the New England Conservatory of Music with Pat Metheny, Grammy-award winning guitarist, and George Benson, international recording star.
In the spring, elementary school students will hear the music of Tom Chapin. He has been nicknamed "the Pied Piper of children's music" by Parents Magazine and has won three Grammy Awards for his children's music.
These school concerts are free to the schools and students. They are made possible through support of Colony Brands, Inc., Monroe Morning Optimist Club, and others.
