LC Historical Society plans artifact program
Community Brief

MONROE — The Lafayette County Historical Society is holding a program at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 2 in the downstairs meeting room of Town Bank, 15815 Wisconsin 81, Darlington.

Dennis Fox will present a program on his collection and knowledge of ancient artifacts found locally. He will share not only what he has found, but what the experts believe it means.

When the groundhog looks for his shadow this coming February 2nd, we don’t know what he will see. But anyone looking at the ground in our area can find treasure in the form of relics from ancient days. We are fortunate that our land in Lafayette County has some very special qualities. The glaciers didn’t scour the land “clean.” And remaining agricultural, the county abounds with spaces little changed since people first began to inhabit North America.

Several landowners and farmers don’t realize their land includes ancient locations of towns, ceremonial areas or “Indian Mounds” until they find something.

For the latest news on what finds can tell those who have located an artifact of any kind, or to help identify an item, the program by Dennis Fox welcomes questions. It is also the Historical Society’s quarterly membership meeting at 1 p.m. and refreshments will be served after the program.
