Last Civil War solider honored in South Wayne

SOUTH WAYNE — This Saturday Aug. 31, at noon, a ceremony will take place to honor the last Civil War Union soldier buried in Lafayette County, James Perrigo. The gravesite is in Blaisdell Cemetery, in South Wayne. The ceremony will include a musket firing and placement of a marker honoring Perrigo’s service. The ceremony will be led by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (a successor to the GAR organization), with participation by the Lafayette County Historical Society and the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Any relatives or interested persons are welcome to attend this public event.
