JUDA - Elias Klar, Juda, is one of 10 junior firefighters to receive a $5,000 scholarship through the National Junior Firefighter Scholarship and Grant Program. The scholarship is made possible by the National Volunteer Fire Council in partnership with the Dunkin' Brands Community Foundation. Juda Community Fire Department will also receive a $5,000 grant to support their junior firefighter program.
In addition to serving as a junior firefighter for over four years, Klar is an Eagle Scout and is currently an assistant scoutmaster, He was part of the School District of Juda's concert band, jazz band, and choir, and plays piano and guitar in his spare time. Klar was also a member of the school's basketball, football and track teams. He is a recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award. He graduated in May and will be attending Abilene Christian University in the fall, with a planned major in business.
Currently in its inaugural year, the National Junior Firefighter Scholarship and Grant Program has been an enormous success, and hundreds of junior firefighters applied for the competitive scholarships. In addition, the number of juniors and departments registered for the National Junior Firefighter Program has more than doubled since the scholarship application period opened.
Klar and the Juda Community Fire Department, along with the other winning junior firefighters and their departments, were honored during Firehouse Expo on July 24 at the Baltimore, Maryland Convention Center. Recipients received travel to the event courtesy of the Dunkin' Brands Community Foundation, along with complimentary admission courtesy of Firehouse Expo.
The NVFC National Junior Firefighter Program provides resources and tools to fire and EMS departments to help them establish, expand, and manage a local youth participation program.
