MADISON - Rep. Steve Hilgenberg, D-Dodgeville, was awarded the Gaylord Nelson Human Services award May 7 for his successful effort to expand dental care to low-income children and adults.
Hilgenberg said he was honored to receive the award.
"To be presented with an award associated with one of our state's great political leaders is truly an honor," Hilgenberg said.
Hilgenberg helped secure the funds for the Darlington Regional Dental Clinic and the Dodgeville Dental Clinic.
Hilgenberg said the clinics are a "crucial bridge" to help low-income families receive important care.
"This system is failing when children and adults aren't able to see a dentist until problems become severe," Hilgenberg said. "Prevention is the key, not only for people's health but for the overall cost."
The award was presented by the Wisconsin Community Action Program.
