MONROE — The Wisconsin Association for Language Teachers recently announced Lisa Reese Hendrickson, Monroe, received the 2018 WAFLT Distinguished Educator Award.

WAFLT’s highest recognition, the Distinguished Language Educator Award is given annually to an individual of the language teaching profession who has demonstrated long-term achievement and service to the organization and to the profession at the local, state, regional and national levels.

Hendrickson is a 1970 graduate of Wisconsin Dells High School. After graduating from Lawrence University with a B.A. in Spanish, she earned her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Hendrickson’s diverse career included teaching Spanish in Kenosha and Bloomer, as well as at Concordia Language Villages in Minnesota. She taught Spanish at Monroe High School and Monroe Middle School for 32 years before her retirement in 2011. She established the Costa Rica Student Exchange in 1995, which is still successfully serving Monroe High School students and families today.

Along with her colleague, Karen Luond Fowdy, Lisa has presented workshops and sessions on World Language Curriculum and Instruction at state, regional and national conferences and advised school districts in Wisconsin, Missouri, Minnesota, South Carolina, Illinois and Iowa. In 1982, Hendrickson became a volunteer for A.F.S. Intercultural Student Exchange and continues to promote the opportunities to both travel and host through that long-standing and respected program.

Hendrickson lives in Monroe with her husband, Andrew. She currently serves as president of the Monroe Morning Optimists, president of the Omicron Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa and sings with the Bel Canto choir.

WAFLT has been serving Wisconsin world language teachers since 1913 and is one of the largest state language associations in the country. The purpose of WAFLT is to promote, strengthen and facilitate the teaching and life-long learning of world languages and cultures in schools and communities to meet the needs of our increasingly interdependent world.
