Health screenings planned

MONROE - Stroke Detection Plus, a mobile ultrasound service that does preventative health screenings throughout the Midwest will be conducting stroke and vascular screenings from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 23, at the Angelus Retirement Community.

Stroke Detection Plus screens the carotid arteries looking for plaque buildup or blockage. The vast majority of strokes occur because of a lack of blood flow to the brain. This test can determine the percentage of blockage restricting that flow. The second test looks for aortic aneurysm, which is an enlargement of the vessel that feeds the lower extremities with blood. The third test is for peripheral vascular disease, which is blockage in the arms and legs. The final screening is for Osteoporosis, which looks for low or abnormal bone mass.

Screening Information

1. Stroke: This screening visualizes the buildup of fatty plaque in the carotid arteries that can lead to stroke, 75 percent of which could be prevented with screening.

Risk Factors: over age 40, high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, more than 20 pounds overweight, lack of exercise, family history of stroke or heart disease.

Warning Signs: sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, sudden loss of vision, sudden confusion or dizziness, sudden severe headaches.

2. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: This screening visualizes the existence of an aneurysm in the abdominal aorta that can rupture and be fatal

Risk Factors: Family history, high blood pressure, smoking

Warning signs: The vast majority are without symptoms.

3. Peripheral Vascular Disease: This screening checks for blockage in the legs. Abnormal results indicate high risk of coronary artery disease.

Risk Factors: Diabetes, high blood pressure, history of coronary artery disease.

Warning signs: Numbness, tingling, or pain in the legs, loss of hair on toes and feet, cramping in the legs that is relieved with rest.

4. Osteoporosis: Screens for abnormal bone mass density in men and women. Osteoporosis is silent and painless until bone fractures occur. Early treatment is painless and effective.

Risk Factors: History of fracture, family history of osteoporosis, low calcium intake, lack of exercise, tobacco use.

Warning Signs: People may not know they have it until their bones weaken so much that a strain, bump, or fall causes a fracture, or a vertebra to collapse. Collapsed vertebra may initially feel like severe back pain.

All four tests are $120, any three tests are $100, or any individual test is $40. The screening will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at the Angelus Retirement Community, 616 8th Ave., in Monroe. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling toll free (877) 732-8258.
