FREEPORT — The Highland Theatre Department will host a spring virtual production at 7:30 p.m. on March 18 and 19 showcasing monologues and poems by Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes. Attendees will need to register for the free virtual event at highland.edu/tickets to receive the performance link.

Hurston was revolutionary in protecting the rights of African Americans. She was known during the Harlem Renaissance for her wit, irreverence and folk writing style. She was notable for her success in the north but had a difficult time in raising awareness and improve relations in the south about the plight of African Americans.

Hughes was also well known during the Harlem Renaissance for his intellect, literacy and artistic nature. Hughes was known as a major poet, and also for his novels, short stories, essays and plays.
