MONROE - The Colonel Benjamin Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution invited students who were chosen to be a Good Citizen from their schools to come to a DAR meeting for lunch, held on Tuesday, April 1.

Five out of the 12 students who were chosen as Good Citizens attended. Those who attended were Clare Geitzel, Monticello; Tabatha Davis, Juda; Shannon McDaniel, Darlington; Marissa Monson, Blackhawk; Aimee Von Arx, Argyle. Those Good Citizens who were unable to attend were Felicia Conley, Albany; Charles Hamilton, Cuba City; Jared Hardy, Monroe; Alayna Truttman, New Glarus; Julia Meyer, Blanchardville; Holly Rennert, Shullsburg; and Kathryn Ryser, Brodhead.

The Colonel Benjamin Harrison Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution participates in the DAR Good Citizen Program every year. Each high school in the area chooses a student from the senior class who demonstrates good citizen qualities. That student is then the school's Good Citizen. If that student chooses, they may also enter an essay contest in which they write from a prompt. The essay, plus other personal information such as an official grade transcript, lists of extra-curricular activities, future plans and two letters of recommendation, are then read by three judges.

The judges give points to each student in the personal part and the essay part and the student with the highest total points becomes our chapter Good Citizen Contest winner. Their essay is then sent to the state competition. A winner is chosen at the state level, then the regional and the national level.

This year's chapter winner was Jared Hardy from Monroe High School. His essay has been sent on to the state level. The chapter has not heard who has won.
