BRODHEAD - Do you have unusual kitchen gadgets you can't identify? Or maybe kitchen gadgets others may not be able to identify? If so, consider bringing them to "Guess the Gadget Night," at 7 p.m., Friday, May 20 at Brodhead High School.
The event has a game show flavor and will feature a panel of local celebrities who will suggest the use of each gadget and try to stump the audience. (One of the panelists will know the real use; other panelists will make up plausible stories.) An expert from the Wisconsin Historical Museum will be on hand that evening to provide historical and cultural context for various gadgets.
Local historians and foodies are asked to bring unusual gadgets that reflect the culture and history of the Green County area. This is a night to explore kitchen gadget stories and how gadgets are embedded in our cultural traditions.
If you have obscure or historical gadgets that would work well for Guess the Gadget Night, bring them to the Green County UW-Extension office or contact Cara Carper at the Extension office at (608) 328-9440. UWEX will store objects safely until the night of the event (and if you are unable to identify what they are used for, we will contact our experts to find out).
A combination of the game show "To Tell the Truth" and the board game "Balderdash," Gadget Night is part of the Smithsonian exhibit, "Key Ingredients: America by Food" in Brodhead, at the Brodhead Library May 6 to June 17.
The exhibit explores the connections between Americans and the foods they produce, prepare, preserve, and present at table. Key Ingredients looks beyond the home to restaurants, diners, and celebrations that help build a sense of community through food. The exhibit also addresses farming, table manners, and food history.
A number of other special events will be held during the time of the exhibit, including a pie contest, a strawberry sundae celebration, and a Native American gardening and cooking demonstration. The Brodhead Historical Society has also created a brochure highlighting a Food Tour of Historic Brodhead. Ag tourism events already taking place during the exhibit, including Breakfast on the Farm and Brodhead's Tour the Farms Day, will be cross-promoted in the marketing of Key Ingredients.
