Green County youth excel at state 4-H meats contest

MADISON - The State 4-H Meats contest was held Saturday, Feb. 20, at the UW-Madison Meats Lab in Madison.

Eight counties participated in the state contest, which consists of evaluating classes of hams, beef, pork and lamb carcasses, and two placing classes of retail cuts. Youth participants also identified 30 retail cuts of beef, pork or lamb and quality, and yield graded five beef carcasses.

Green County 4-H sent a Junior and Senior teams for the event.

Team members included, Senior Division: Christina Richardson, Clarno 4-H, Cora Demler, York 4-H and Heidi Mann, Juda Jolly Juniors 4-H. The junior team consisted of Miranda Mann, Juda Jolly Juniors 4-H and Danielle Schneider, Young Americans 4-H.

The Green County Senior Team placed fourth out of eight teams. Cora Demler placed fifth overall as an individual. The Green County Junior Team consisting of Dani Schneider, Young Americans 4-H individually placed 12th overall, while Miranda Mann placed 16th.

Sponsors for the State 4-H Meats contest include The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation and UW-Extension. The contest is organized annually by Extension Livestock Specialist Bernie O'Rourke and 4-H Youth Development Specialist Melanie Miller.
