REEPORT - The Freeport Sunrise Rotary, in partnership with Culvers of Freeport, recently announced the return of what, for many years, was an annual event. Labor Day weekend will find Yellow Creek yellow with hundreds of rubber ducks. The Great Debate Duck Race - a part of the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Sesquicentennial celebration - will bring some lucky winner $1,000 and bring everyone a chance for fun and contribution to the community. Proceeds from this year's race will provide funds to support Little Cubs Field, Norman Sleezer Home, Highland Community College Student Scholarships and various other Freeport area projects.
The race will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31, starting at the footbridge just below the dam in Krape Park. Everyone is welcome to watch but you need not be present to win. Entry tickets, which will be matched to individual ducks the day of the race, can be purchased at Culvers for $5 each or three for $10. Each entry will be represented by a duck in one of the preliminary heats of the race. The first two winners in each preliminary heat will be represented in the final heat. The odds of winning a preliminary heat will be no less than 1 in 250. The final heat will consist of no more than 100 ducks - the odds of winning being 1 in 100 or better. For more information, contact Ted Odendahl at (815) 233-2144.
