NEW GLARUS - The Village of New Glarus and the Friends of the Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum announced receipt of a grant award from the Dr. Fred W. and Alice J. Kundert Charitable Fund, a resource for non-profit organizations and a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin. Grants from this fund have supported the arts, education, health and human services and historic preservation.

This grant will provide funding to replace logs on the Chalet roof and restoration of four windows in the museum. A recent roof replacement required the removal of the logs, which were rotting and needed replacement. Four second-story windows are down to bare wood in places, with glazing cracking and peeling off. A $3,000 bid for the replacement/reinstallation of the logs and rocks was received by the Village of New Glarus. As of the last budget meeting, those funds were not part of the 2016 budget. The Friends of the Chalet of the Golden Fleece's volunteer network were able to find suitable replacement logs at a lower cost. That and the grant award reduced Village costs to zero.

Support from The Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin has been instrumental in reviving the Chalet, both as an historic structure and as a museum. Previous grants helped maintain the interior and procure placement on both the state and national Registers of Historic Places. This year's grant will help preserve one of the most unique features of the authentic Bernese Mountain Chalet.
