MONROE - The Green County Genealogical Society celebrated with more than 50 people during its ribbon-cutting and open house held Saturday, Sept. 1.
Recently, the Green County Genealogical Society moved to the lower level of the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Ave.
Several members, friends and Monroe visitors turned out for the event. Mayor Bill Ross, library director Suzann Holland and Friends of the Library member Myra Mueller joined society president Donna Kjendlie in cutting the ribbon and opening the doors to the new room.
The day began with the ribbon-cutting and proceeded with the dedication of the United States flag by Bob Slocum. All joined in for The Pledge of Allegiance. Kjendlie made a short speech to thank those that came and those who volunteered. Visitors were able to browse the displays and do a little research.
The Green County Genealogical Society will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, the third Saturday of every month and after the meetings on the first Saturday of the month.
Cemeteries, county histories, plat books and other materials have been published and reprinted for researchers to use. The society will also be available to help people with their research. The society's continuing projects include indexing obituaries, marriages and the many scrapbooks that have been donated. Volunteers are welcome to come and help.
