GCPH encourages community members to celebrate safely this fall

MONROE — This fall, there are several festivals, events and parades scheduled in communities across Green County. These events are wonderful opportunities to celebrate the people, culture and businesses in Green County. Green County Public Health would like to remind community members to celebrate responsibly, and take steps to help keep people safe at events this fall.

“Green County is known for our great festivals and events, and our department hopes that community members and visitors have fun celebrating when they’re at events this fall,” said RoAnn Warden, Health Officer at Green County Public Health. “We also want people stay safe and healthy while they celebrate. There are a few actions that everyone can do to help keep themselves and others safe at events.”

Community members should keep in mind the following recommendations while at events this fall:

●  Individuals over the age of 21 planning to drink alcohol at events should:

o  Identify a designated driver, get a ride from a ride-share service, or plan another way to get home without driving after drinking.

o  Avoid binge drinking (For most men, this means drinking five or more standard drinks within a few hours. For most women, this means drinking four or more standard drinks within a few hours.)

o  Avoid mixing alcohol with other medications you are using.

●  Be aware of where your food and beverages come from, do not accept drinks or food from strangers who are not event staff/volunteers handling food and beverages. Ask if you’re not sure.

●  Keep kids safe at parades by keeping them in your line of sight, and out of the road when the floats are rolling.

●  Be weather aware; check weather and temperature forecasts ahead of events and plan accordingly.

In addition to these safety reminders, please be sure to follow the rules set by event organizers. Visit the Green County Public Health website and Facebook page for more health information and updates from the health department.
