MONROE — The program for the Nov. 3 meeting of the Green County Genealogical Society will be Daniel Earl’s “Funeral Homes and Family History: They Are Dying to Meet You!”
The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3 in the second floor meeting room of the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Ave. Light refreshments are available 15 minutes before the meeting. Visitors are always welcome at the meetings and there is no cost to attend. Call Sharon Mitchell 815-868-2416 or Donna Kjendlie 608-921-1537 with questions. Leave a message if no answer.
Funeral home records can provide loads of genealogically rich information. The presentation will teach participants what types of records are typically found in funeral homes, how to locate these resources online and “in the field” as well as provide real-life examples of how to search for ancillary clues in funeral home records. The funeral home records available in the GCGS Research Center will also be reviewed. Daniel Earl got his start in family history at age 10 when his father took him to the grave of his great-grandfather. That sparked a lifetime of interest in family history. He has spent the last 25 years researching his family history and helping others make history a part of their story.
The GCGS Research Center, located in lower level of the Monroe Public Library, is available to the public for research. Research Center hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and third Saturday and from 1 to 3 p.m. the first Saturday after the meeting, or by appointment. Main holdings are on Green County. Both Rock and Lafayette Counties are well represented as well as several other counties, states, countries and ethnic groups. A large clipping collection of births, marriages and obituaries is available. Volunteers are on staff to help with research.
