Monticello - The perfect opportunity to ensure chidren know all the rules of the road, are able to safely handle their bicycles and that everything on those bicycles is working properly is a Cub Scout Bike Rodeo being held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 12 at the Monticello Schools.

Children do not need to be a Scout to attend this free event. However, they must be accompanied by an adult, preferably a parent or guardian.

The Bike Rodeo is part of The Harry Espenscheid Tour De Blackhawk.

The bicycle tour, scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 11-13, is being held as part of the Blackhawk Area Council's celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Boy Scouting in America. It is important to note that the Bike Rodeo is open to the public, but for liability reasons, the touring on trails and roads is only open to age appropriate members of BSA.

Blackhawk Area BSA Boy Scouts officials expect that as many as 400 Boy Scouts and their leaders will be bicycling through the area this summer as part of The Harry Espenscheid Tour De Blackhawk.

The touring portion of The Harry Espenscheid Tour De Blackhawk will be staged on the Jane Addams Trail in Illinois, the Badger State Trail, Sugar River State Trail and two road loops starting in Monticello.

Those riding the entire route will cover slightly more than 100 miles.

During the weekend of the ride, Monticello will serve as Tour Headquarters, Camp Central and Trail Central. Various area civic groups will be preparing food for the participants, which will be served at the Zwingli United Church of Christ, and a Saturday evening program is scheduled for the Monticello Village Park.

Harry Espenscheid, the namesake of the ride, spent two years during the 1930s riding his bicycle across the British Isles, mainland Europe, the Middle East, Egypt, India, China and Mongolia. Espenscheid spent many years in Rockford, where he owned a construction company. Now in his 90s, Harry has retired and lives in Los Angeles, California.
