Foundation names award recipients

MONROE - The Monroe Excellence in Education Foundation awarded a total of $6,719 to seven deserving projects for the 2009-2010 school year. The projects and recipients are :

• "Reuse, Reduce, Recycle" by Tracy Bristow and Mike Jones of Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy will receive a grant to be used for informational field trips and materials needed to develop and practice recycling in their classrooms. The students will learn about the "3-R's" of recycling, practicing these methods and teaching others at school.

• "Using Hands-On Learning Equations Learning Systems in Algebra" by Sam Mathiason of Monroe High School, will receive a grant through funds donated by the Monroe Fund. This hands-on approach will help students understand how to solve linear equations through manipulation. Students will be involved in their learning beyond watching the teacher model the concept.

• "Parkside Post" by Elizabeth Dagel of Parkside Elementary is a project that will benefit everyone at the school through funds donated by the Monroe Fund. The concept is an in-school mail system that will give all individuals the opportunity to "connect with one another" through letter writing and postal delivery. Individuals will learn the art of letter writing through notes of kindness, caring, appreciation and recognition thus boosting self esteem and promoting a positive atmosphere.

• "iPods in Music Education" by Jill Leuzinger, Parkside Elementary, John Daane, Northside Elementary and Ingrid Kvam, Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy, will receive funds donated by Joe and Lisa Geyer. Funds will be used to purchase iPods for each elementary which will enhance the music curriculum through seamless classroom music instruction, ability to access a variety of music styles and resources to supplement the curriculum and bring up-to-date technology to the classroom.

• "First Grade Camp" by Jacqui Schutz, Parkside Elementary and Gail Murray, K-5 Instructional Facilitator will receive a grant through funds donated by the MHS Class of 1949 and MHS Class of 1977. The funds will be used to purchase materials to develop effective instructional activities and materials to provide opportunities for the students to master skills in the areas of phonics, segmenting, blending sounds, sight word recognition and writing.

• "Seneo Response System" by Cami Engels, Monroe Middle School will receive a grant through funds donated by the Monroe Kiwanis. This system of individual remotes and receivers will be used in conjunction with other classroom technology to allow students and teachers to immediately assess work being done thus giving the opportunity for additional instruction and understanding of the concept being taught that day.

• "Mass Media" by Jerome Cherney and Jeff Bennett, Monroe High School, will receive a grant through funds from the Tschudy Fund to assist in the development of the new "Media Literacy" class being offered by the high school. The class is designed to acquaint the student with the impact and influence of mass media on both society and the individual consumer.
