SOUTH WAYNE - On Saturday, March 6, 25 members of the Black Hawk Forensics team competed in the Six Rivers East and West Conference tournament at Pecatonica High School. Winning third place conference trophies were Adrianna Hromadka and Nicole Klopefer in play acting; Cassie Jorgenson in moments in history; Trista Cushman in poetry; and Melissa Wellnitz in four-minute speaking. Second-place trophies went to Kate Quinn in serious solo acting; Tyler Quinn in radio speaking; Mackenzie Monson in special occasion speaking; and Lizi Werren in oratory. And 2010 conference champions include: Connor Moore in moments in history; Katie Place in poetry; Savanna Kaster in special occasion speaking; Michael Wolff in radio speaking; Jorden Rupnow in serious solo acting; Thad Brenum in humorous solo acting; and Molly Bechtolt in public address. Black Hawk placed second in the conference behind Pecatonica.
Earlier in the week, Black Hawk advanced 21 of its total 22 team entries to the Wisconsin High School Forensics Association (WHSFA) district speaking competition to be held at University of Wisconsin-Platteville on March 20. At this qualifying event, each entry that receives two scores of "20" or above will advance to the state festival on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus on April 16.
In a contest on February 27, 19 members of the team traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus to compete in the first-ever "Speech Bowl." Black Hawk placed third out of 16 teams and brought home many individual finalist medals and trophies. Connor Moore, finalist, and Katie Place, second, in four-minute speaking; Adrianna Hromadka and Nicole Kloepfer, second, in play acting; Jorden Rupnow, third in prose reading; Kate Quinn, second, and Jorden Rupnow, first, in serious solo acting; Savanna Kaster, third, in special occasion speaking; and Christian Krahenbuhl, second, in radio speaking.
Judging for the team for the events were Anthony Petitjean, and Black Hawk alumni Amy Brenum, Courtney Brooker, Rob Doersam, Savannah Ernzen, Sam Noble, Stephanie Pickett, and Danica Skattum. The team is coached by Sheila Bredeson.
