FFA teams display skills

MADISON - The Albany FFA Agronomy and Milk Quality Teams participated at the Wisconsin FFA State Career Development Event contest on April 27 at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

1,880 FFA members participated in 17 different categories, with the top team from each category being sent to the national competition.

Albany FFA Agronomy placed seventh out of 41 teams. The agronomy team members are Ethan Pfeuti, Grant Schoenenberger, Austin Ross and Johnny Kallgren.

Students in the agronomy contest had to demonstrate basic knowledge of agronomic sciences by being able to identify insects, crop and weed seeds and live specimens, plant diseases, plant nutrient deficiencies and disorders, grain grading, crop inputs and equipment, properly read a soil survey map, determine soil descriptions and uses, soil fertility, fertilizer knowledge and pesticides.

Individual scores and ranks out of 164 participants were Pfeuti (354.8/500, 11th), Kallgren (289.6/500, 41st), Schoenenberger (280.8/500, 51st) and Ross (271.6/500, 56th).

The Milk Quality team placed 22nd out of 73 teams. The Milk Quality Team consists of members Jordan Stefanik, Liz Schroeder, Jordan Neuenschwander and Kaylee Johnson.

The first part of the contest was Milk Flavor Identification and Evaluation. In this part of the event, the participants tasted, identified and scored eight different samples of milk. The second part was cheese flavor identification and evaluation, where members tasted and identified 10 cheese samples. In the third section, students ranked eight sediment discs in order of cleanliness. The final part of the contest was a written exam, which consisted of 50 questions, multiple choice and true/false. The closer a participant's score was to zero, the better.

Individual scores and ranks out of 292 participants were Johnson (138, 72nd), Schroeder (142, 91st), Stefanik (151, 122nd) and Neuenschwander (156, 148th).
