MONROE — The Green County Humane Society was one of several southeastern Wisconsin shelters that received dogs from shelters in North Carolina that were affected by Hurricane Florence.

“Families who are interested in adopting one of the seven dogs from North Carolina or any dog or cat in our shelter, can fill out an adoption application and within one or two days we can generally place the animal,” said Laci Westgard, Public Affairs Coordinator. “We make sure to consider which home is the best fit for each animal.”

The Humane Society of the United States and Wings of Rescue organized the plan to make more space for animals that may have been separated from their families.

“We haven’t worked with the Humane Society of the United States before,” said Westgard, who grew up in Monroe and used to volunteer at the Green County Humane Society when she was in high school. “We usually work with a shelter in Alabama. Currently, we have 15-20 dogs from that shelter, seven dogs from North Carolina and 135 cats.”

Westgard wants to assure the public that, “all of the dogs were adoptable before the hurricane.”

The Green County Humane Society is off of Wisconsin 81 near Monroe; hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The Society is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and all holidays.
