MONROE — Aiding over 325 families in Green County, the Baker’s Dozen held its first annual event, Tuesday, Nov. 30. With a budget of $4,000, the group was able to create baker bags for local food pantries filled ingredients to create home-baked treats for the holidays. Composed of less than a dozen people, the group was able to make all 325 bags in under two hours.

The Bakers Dozen created baker bags to fill the need of supplies to make bake goods. These resources are not always available at local food pantries. The baking items include flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and soda, vanilla extract, salt, chocolate chips, measuring cups, eggs, and butter.

The Green County Food Pantry in Monroe, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Monroe, and Green Cares Food Pantry in Monticello all received 100 baker bags. The food pantries, along with others that received the bags, are able to serve all over Green County including Monroe, Monticello, Albany, New Glarus, Juda, Argyle, and Brodhead — anywhere there is a need.

After another challenging year, food pantries have been struggling to aid more and more families. According to Feeding America, pantries are serving 55 percent more people now than before the pandemic. The lack of resources has been difficult.  Volunteers at the food banks have also been down.

The Baker’s Dozen is still accepting financial donations towards the project. A donation of $500 will support 50 families. Please mail a check to Bakers Dozen - Monroe Green Food Pantry, P.O. Box 15, Monroe, WI 53566. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Rick Maliszewski at
