MONROE - If you are an adult child, you can be almost certain that your parents will need additional services as they get older. These additional services might include more medical help, help with household and yard maintenance chores, help with self-care, and oversight or increased involvement in their financial affairs. If you are a parent of an adult child, you should expect and plan for the future necessity of some of these things as well. There are lots of choices to be made. Planning ahead for these decisions is really important. Are you ready?

Often family members don't want to talk about these future concerns. It can be very difficult to address these issues and choices. Parents may not wish to think about this inevitable reality. Adult children may not feel comfortable talking about these issues either for many reasons. One reason is that we don't want to think about our parents' later years and eventual loss. Another reason might be family relationship issues, or disagreements between adult children and parents or between adult siblings. Whether we like it or not, these decisions will need to be made. If we are not prepared, this time of our parents' decline will be even more difficult and stressful.

A workshop will be facilitated by Green County UW-Extension Family Living Agent, Bridget Mouchon, from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Monroe Behring Senior Center.

The same workshop will also be held at Blackhawk Technical College Monroe Campus from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13.

The cost is $10 per person. This workshop will guide participants through many of the decisions that family members must plan for, and will also provide an excellent set of planning resources. Register by calling the Green County UW-Extension office, 328-9440.
