Exotic pet surrender event Feb. 28 in Monroe

MONROE — Those with an exotic pet that they are no longer able to care for can bring their pet to the Exotic Pet Surrender Event from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Green County Land and Water Conservation Department, 1627 4th Avenue West, Monroe.

This event takes place during the National Invasive Species Awareness Week, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the threats invasive species pose to native ecosystems. One of the leading causes of invasive species introductions is the release of exotic pets into the wild. By providing safe and responsible surrender options, we’re helping prevent future ecological harm, and giving these pets a second chance at life in a loving home.

Owners may surrender their pet in a safe, judgement free atmosphere. Event holders will be accepting fish, invertebrates, reptiles, pet birds, and small mammals — with no questions asked. To ensure a pet’s safety, bring them in a secure, water-resistant container.

They will not be accepting domestic pets like dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and chickens. Those with domestic animals should inquire within a local shelter or rescue for re-homing options.

Birds, reptiles, and mammals from out of state must be accompanied by a CVI (health certificate). After a brief quarantine period, all surrendered animals will be available for adoption through J & R Aquatic Animal Rescue.

This event is co-hosted by J & R Animal Rescue, Upper Sugar River Watershed Association, and the Green County Land and Water Conservation Department.

Those with any questions should feel free to reach out to Todd Jenson at (608) 325-4195 Ext. 2682 or Todd.Jenson@wi.nacdnet.net.
