MONROE — In Wisconsin, older adults face an alarming risk of serious injury from falls — more than twice the national average. But a workshop offered through the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Green County aims to reverse that trend and empower residents to take proactive steps toward safety.

The ADRC, in partnership with SSM Health Monroe, will offer a Stepping On workshop beginning Monday, July 14 at the Green County Human Services Building in Monroe. The seven-week series, meeting once a week for two hours, is designed to help adults aged 60 and older reduce their risk of falling and maintain their independence.

“Falls are not a normal part of aging — and they are preventable,” said Laura Steiner, Education & Prevention Specialist at ADRC of Green County. “We want to give older adults the tools and confidence to live safely and stay active.”

Each session features expert advice from local professionals, including physical therapists, pharmacists, vision specialists, and law enforcement officers. Participants learn exercises and practical strategies to build strength and balance, avoid everyday hazards, and make safer decisions at home and in the community.

Evidence from Wisconsin-based studies shows that Stepping On reduces the risk of falling by up to 31%, significantly lowering emergency room visits and injury-related stress.

The workshop is open to adults age 60 and older who have experienced a fall or are concerned about falling. A $15 donation is suggested, and pre-registration is required as space is limited. There are no residency restrictions — everyone is welcome.

To register, call the ADRC Green County Office at 608-328-9499, or register online by visiting their website at www.adrcgreencounty.org.
