BRODHEAD - The Driftless Area Artists and McGowan Architecture have teamed up to fund and sponsor their first Driftless Youth Art Show from April 2 to 30 at the Brodhead Public Library. The show will display the art of local middle school students and entry is free.
Both organizations are committed to promoting the arts in southern Wisconsin and are using the show as a means to encourage young adults to explore their artistic talents as future career options.
Art teachers from the middle schools in Albany, Brodhead, Juda, Monticello and New Glarus have been asked to have their classes participate in the event. The youth art show is open to all seventh- and eighth-grade students from those schools and to home schooled students that reside in those districts. Cash awards will be given for Best of Show, $50; the Driftless Prize, $35; the Artist's Prize, $35; three Judges Choice awards, $20 each; a People's Choice award, $20; and multiple Honor Awards, $15 each.
All of the works will be judged by three local artists, who will determine which of the works will be granted awards. The exception will be the People's Choice award, which will be determined by a vote of the public, who may cast their ballots at the library from April 2-15. Voting will be restricted to one vote per day per person.
Subject matter and media are the choice of the artist. Works must be original creations, from conception to completion, by the student artist and must be completed entirely by the artist. Works acceptable for submission include 2D, 3D and digital computer graphics, which must be printed in a hardcopy format for inclusion in the show. Up to two entries from each artist will be accepted.
Students are to submit their art work to their art teachers by March 28. The show begins April 2 and ends on April 30. An awards ceremony will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. April 16 at the Brodhead Public Library. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for viewing. At the completion of the show, art works will be returned to art teachers who will then return the works to each of the artists.
