Don’t let falls hold you back: Join ‘Stepping On’

ALBANY — September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the risks of falling and empowering older adults to stay safe, active, and independent. In Wisconsin, where older adults face more than double the national average risk of serious fall-related injuries, local efforts to combat falls are more important than ever.

This fall, the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Green County, in partnership with SSM Health Monroe, is offering a proven program designed to help older adults reduce their fall risk. The Stepping On workshop begins Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Lions Club Building in Albany. The seven-week series meets weekly from 1 to 3 p.m. and provides practical strategies, exercises, and support to help participants live more confidently and prevent falls.

“Falls are not a normal part of aging — and they are preventable,” said Laura Steiner, Education & Prevention Specialist at the ADRC of Green County. “Stepping On gives older adults the tools and confidence to keep doing the things they love safely.”

Each session features presentations from local experts, including physical therapists, pharmacists, vision specialists, and law enforcement officers. Participants learn exercises and practical strategies to build strength and balance, avoid everyday hazards, and make safer decisions at home and in the community.

Evidence from Wisconsin-based studies shows that Stepping On reduces the risk of falling by up to 31%, significantly lowering emergency room visits and injury-related stress.

The workshop is open to adults age 60 and older who have experienced a fall or are concerned about falling. A $15 suggested donation helps cover some materials. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited. There are no residency restrictions — all are welcome.
