MONROE - Area families are invited to explore birding as a family hobby during the Discover Winter Birds event, which will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 in the second floor meeting room of the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Ave.

Discover Winter Birds will offer children and adults several opportunities to learn more about our feathered friends, try a little science and use their creativity. There will be an opportunity for participants to identify by sight and sound the common winter birds of south central Wisconsin, and volunteers will be on hand to help folks create unique bird puppets.

All materials will be provided at the 90-minute program, which is sponsored by the Green-Rock Audubon Society and the youth services department of the Monroe Public Library. There is no charge for the event.

Eunice Brennan and Donna Oxenreider, co-chairs of the Green-Rock Audubon Society Education Committee, and Kris Ault, youth services coordinator at the Monroe Public Library, will present the workshop.

Information about the Green-Rock Audubon Society, Monroe's recent Bird City status, window decals, bird feeding tips, Internet sites for bird enthusiasts, and nearby places to see birds will be available. Door prizes will be awarded at the end of the program.

More information on birding is available at www.greenrockaudubon.org. For accommodations, contact the Youth Services Department of the Monroe Public Library at (608) 328-7010.
