DARLINGTON - Persons interested in being part of a Barn Quilt Project Planning Committee are invited to attend an organizational meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 10, at the UW Extension office in Darlington. Many details will be provided with many more details yet to be decided. This is a great opportunity to do good for the people of the county. People passionate about quilts, barns, history, art, heritage or painting, are encouraged to attend.

Quilts are a symbol of the heritage of our rural county. They provide not only warmth and comfort, but a social opportunity and artistic outlet for generations. Quilt block patterns depict places, events and vocations. They bring richness to everyday life.

Barn Quilts are colorful 8-foot square plywood quilt blocks mounted on barns or other buildings. They are believed to have originated in Ohio by a woman who wanted to honor her mother, an avid quilter. A "Clothesline of Quilts" has spread through counties in Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee.

What better way to celebrate the culture and history of Lafayette County than to bring community members and families together to create their own Barn Quilts to commemorate their heritage. This project is being encouraged by the Lafayette County 4-H Leaders' Association and the Lafayette County Association of Home and Community Education (HCE). It fulfills a yearning to work together on an inter-generational, county-wide project.
