MONROE - The local Colonel Benjamin Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has named the Good Citizens winners from the local and surrounding high schools. The Good Citizen program and the scholarship contest program are offered to seniors in high school.
Faculty from high schools choose three seniors who have demonstrated, in an outstanding way, the qualities of a good citizen. From these three students, one student is chosen to be honored as a school's DAR Good Citizen. Each school's DAR Good Citizen receives a DAR Good Citizen pin, certificate and wallet recognition card.
This student is then eligible, if he or she wishes, to enter the DAR Good Citizen scholarship contest. The students write an essay and also must write about their personal life describing how he or she has tried to manifest the qualities of a good citizen, which are dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Papers are then judged and the winning paper is then sent to the state DAR, and the winner of the state contest receives an award in the amount of at least $250 and a special state DAR Good Citizens pin and certificate.
The state winning papers then are sent to national and the NDAR winners will be invited to Washington, D.C. to attend the DAR Continental Congress and will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship, an inscribed silver bowl, and certificate. Each of the eight national division winners will receive a cash award in the amount of $500.
The 2011 Good Citizens from the area are: Sydney Nicole Bump, Albany High School; Beth Bigelow, Argyle High School; Bryant Garth Michael Luhman, Blackhawk High School; David H. Melssen, Cuba City High School; Logan Wells, Monroe High School; Taylor Pfeuti, Monticello High School; Jessica Ann O'Brien, New Glarus High School; Andrea Jo McGowan, Pecatonica High School; Jamie Teutschmann, Shullsburg High School; Alycia Lynn Grenzow, Juda High School, and Gavin Gregory Garrett, Brodhead High School.
