MONROE - The local Daughters of the American Revolution organization, Colonel Benjamin Harrison, is promoting Constitution Week awareness, beginning Thursday.
In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17 through 23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. It was later adopted by the US Congress and signed into law on Aug. 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The celebration aims to emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's heritage and the foundation of the way of life; and encourage people to study the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution.
