BRODHEAD - A car/motorcycle cruise benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will be held Oct. 8, with a rain date of Oct. 15. Participants will meet at Cardinal Lanes in Brodhead and leave at about 10:30 a.m. for a leisurely two-hour drive, with lunch and a few stops along the way.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital treats about 260 patients each day, according to a press release. On average, 5,700 active patients visit the hospital each year, most of whom are treated on an outpatient basis. During the past five years, 81 cents of every dollar received has supported research and treatment at St. Jude.

No family receives a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food, and no child is denied treatment due to a family's inability to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization, through events such as the "Cruisin' for St. Jude" event.

From an annual operating budget in 1962 of about $1 million to an operating cost of $2.2 million per day in 2015, ALSAC relies on its volunteers and donors to continue to meet the needs of the hospital's scientists and doctors to conduct research and develop lifesaving treatments that help children with cancer and other deadly diseases.

Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tennessee, St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world: Scientists worldwide can use this knowledge to save more children.

The volunteer coordinator for the event is Brenda Kranig. If interested in participating or making a pledge or a donation, contact Kranig at 608-751-9092, 608-862-3233 or at brendakranig@yahoo.com. Pledge forms are required to participate and can be obtained by contacting Kranig as soon as possible, preferably at least two to three weeks before the event to allow adequate time to collect contributions. Pledge sheets and pledge money/contributions will be turned in the day of the event.

Contributions can be dropped off at 704 4th St., Albany, or mailed to Kranig at P.O. Box 343, Albany, WI 53502. Checks should be made out to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
