MONROE - The local country and western musical favorite "Horsefeathers" will kick off this summer's free Concert on the Square series this Thursday, June 11. The performance is slated for 6:30-9:30 p.m. on the north side of the Square. The concerts are sponsored by Monroe Main Street and underwritten with major funding from The Monroe Fund, Glanbia Ingredients and The Monroe Clinic. Those attending should bring their own lawn chairs.
The concerts will be held on the Square even though the area is currently undergoing a large streetscape renovation project. Since the construction project will proceed in one area at a time, the traffic flow around the Square will remain open and audiences should have no trouble parking.
Box lunches will be available at Café Claudeen's, Turner Hall and the Garden Deli. Ruf's Confectionery will also be open during the concerts. All are located on or near the Square. Special Olympics volunteers will be selling popcorn as a fundraiser. The popcorn is provided to the group, free of charge, by Ruf's and Bob's Pub.
In the event of inclement weather, the concerts will move to either Turner Hall or the Monroe Middle School, both located just two blocks off the Square. Signs will be posted directing people to either location.
Upcoming concerts include, June 25, "Red Hot Dixie;" July 9, "Stranded in Iowa;" July 23, "The Jimmys;" Aug. 6, "Saxtet Plus;" and, Aug. 20, "Jefferson County Bluegrass Band."
Information is available by calling Monroe Main Street at 328-4023 or e-mailing monroemainstreet@tds.net.
