MONROE - The Monroe City Band will present its annual Variety Show/Cabaret Night at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31 in the Grand Hall of Turner Hall, 1217 17th Ave.

Tickets are $6 and are available from members of the city band or at the door.

Host Herb Wilson will guide the audience on a look back to the history of late-night television assisted by guests, and music from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Guest performers include Chris Weis, Jeff Ingebritsen and Josh Boll, with saxophonist Ken Kilian and vocalist Michelle DuVall, who will join the city band's 17-piece stage band for the evening. Seating will be cabaret-style and an area will be provided for dancing. Refreshments will also be available for purchase.

The variety show is an outgrowth of the joint effort between the Monroe Lions and the city band known as the "Modern Minstrel Show," a popular and well-attended event held annually from the 1960s to the early '80s featuring local talent assembled by band's founder and director Allan F. "Pat" Barnard. The show gradually transitioned into a cabaret-format and moved to Turner Hall in the mid-1980s.

The Monroe City Band is in its 63rd season and performs summer concerts with a full concert band in Monroe's Twining Park. The Swiss-style band shell has been the band's summer home since 1965. Concerts this summer will be on June 11 and 25, and July 4, 16 and 30.

Anyone interested in joining the band can contact director Randy Schneeberger at (608) 325-9722.
