MONROE — The Monroe City Band concludes its summer concert series on Sunday, Aug. 11 with a special concert to honor its 70th year. The concert begins at 2 p.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church.

This concert will be the premiere performance of Radiance by composer Rob Romeyn. The band commissioned this piece as a special composition for their 70th season. Radiance, along with several other pieces, will be conducted by Randy Schneeberger, a former director with the Monroe City Band and School District of Monroe Music Department.

This concert will also feature a variety of music spanning the ages and will pay special tribute to the directors throughout the years.

The band will perform several pieces that honor former directors, the late Allan F. Barnard and Irv Wehrman. Organist Julie Shippy-McClain will also be featured in Alfred Reed’s powerful piece Alleluia Laudamus Te.

This concert will conclude the band’s summer concert season.

They will finish the 2019 season with the traditional holiday concerts on Dec. 1 and kick-off their 71st season with the Stage Band concert on Saturday, March 28, 2020.
