MONROE - Eric Jubeck, a high school special education teacher, will instruct the Monroe Chess Club this year. The new program will meet Wednesdays, Oct. 11, 18 and 25 and Nov. 1, 8 and 15 at Monroe High School in room R01. This program is for children in first through 12th grades. The fee of $30 includes a T-shirt.

"Beginner Chess" is a program for first through sixth graders with little or no experience, or just basic knowledge. This group may ride the bus to the high school, meet in the M-room and have a snack if they bring one. A Park and Recreation staff member will take them to the meeting room from 4 to 5 p.m.

Skills taught for this group will be: Name, movement and value of the pieces; understanding check and checkmate; basic opening move strategies; combinations to checkmate; introductory moves and strategies such as castling, en passe, fork and skewer; and playing against an opponent every week.

"Tournament Chess" is for second through eighth graders who understand a majority of "Beginner Chess" concepts and are interested in skills to be successful at tournament chess. This class meets from 5 to 6 p.m. at Monroe High School in room R01. Students will meet Park and Recreation staff by the arches at the high school to find out where to go. Skills taught in this class are: Advanced opening moves - understanding "owning the middle;" mid-game strategies - when both up and down points; end-game check mating with tough combinations of pieces remaining; using a clock and notation; and playing "tournament style" games.

Students may register online at www.cityofmonroe.org or stop at the temporary Park and Rec office located in the Streets Department, 1064 5th Ave., across from PDC.

Trees still available for terrace tree planting program

MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department has four American sentry linden trees left in its Fall Terrace Tree Planting Program. Tree orders for the fall planting are due Monday. A red flag needs to be placed by Oct. 16 to mark where on the terrace the tree is to be planted.

Planting will begin the week of Oct. 23. The cost for one American sentry linden is $78. Cost includes planting, staking, mulching, fertilizing and watering the tree at the time of planting. Care instructions will be given. The trees are guaranteed for one year.
